Marcos Navarro (b. 1989, Basque Country / Barcelona, Spain) returns to Chong Gallery this time with a solo show titled The Others We Become.
In this new body of work, Navarro deepens his exploration of what he describes as “atmospheric painting,” engaging in a dialogue between the timeless and the present moment.
His paintings unfold in layers. At their foundation is the natural environment—a long-standing interest for the artist. Vast landscapes such as Iceland and the Swiss Alps serve as the backdrop, the stage on which the works are set. Onto this setting, Navarro introduces a distinctly contemporary presence: artificial intelligence. Fascinated by the process, he reflects on how, even when he prompts the machine with specific intentions, it is ultimately the machine that determines the final image—a dynamic that mirrors society’s increasingly quiet acceptance of algorithmic choice. He invites the viewers to reflect on the feeling it triggers within them.
Technically, Navarro pushes his practice forward by dismantling familiar techniques and embracing more abstract, demanding forms of brushwork. His softly blurred portraits reference classical ideals of beauty from art history, while simultaneously feeling unmistakably current—rooted in the visual language and uncertainties of our time.

Dans ces nouvelles oeuvres, Navarro approfondit son exploration de ce qu’il qualifie de
« peinture atmosphérique », en instaurant un dialogue entre l’intemporel et le présent.
Ses peintures se déploient en plusieurs strates. À leur base se trouve l’environnement naturel, un intérêt de longue date pour l’artiste. Des paysages vastes et ouverts, tels que l’Islande ou les Alpes suisses, servent de décor, de scène sur laquelle les œuvres prennent place. Sur ce fond, Navarro introduit une présence résolument contemporaine : l’intelligence artificielle. Fasciné par ce processus, il observe que, même lorsqu’il formule des instructions précises à la machine, c’est finalement celle-ci qui détermine l’image finale — une dynamique qui fait écho à l’acceptation de plus en plus silencieuse, par notre société, des choix algorithmiques. L’artiste invite ainsi les spectateurs à s’interroger sur les émotions et les réactions que ce phénomène suscite en eux.
Sur le plan technique, Navarro fait évoluer sa pratique en déconstruisant ses procédés habituels et en explorant une gestuelle plus abstraite et exigeante. Ses portraits volontairement flous dialoguent avec les idéaux classiques de beauté de l’histoire de l’art, tout en affirmant une esthétique profondément contemporaine, ancrée dans le langage visuel et les incertitudes de notre époque.
